When creating our own piece of Media, it was extremely important to take inspiration from other Media products, when doing our Horror we took inspiration from 3 other Slashers. By looking at other successful and popular horror films and how they use their shots it's gives us an idea on how we would want to build tension, and the kind of shots we want for our OTS. We looked at:
Scream - 1996 (Because of its clear connection with the sub-genre of Slasher, they use a good mix of bulding tension which the bloody element of slashers.)
Blair Witch Project - 1999 (We used this as inspiration because it, like our opening titles sequences if filmed from first person and therefore we needed to look at some of the techniques they have used. It was massively important that we studded this greatly due there impressive use of first person and giving the illusion that the audience is in that situation.)
Paranormal Activity - 2007 (Even though Paranormal Activity is a Paranormal Film, and our Sub-genre is slasher we wanted to look at the way in which they build tension by using lighting and the power of suggestion.)
The Women in Black - 2012 (We needed to take inspiration from way that, the women in black uses the shadows and making the audience feel the tension in the scene. Also the way in which they build tension to make sure that when the jump scares come the audience is already on the edge of their seats.)
Even though you take inspiration from the other succesfull horror films, you need to make sure that you have a level of independence in the opening title sequence to give that fresh and interesting look.
The importance of taking inspiration from other films
There are many benefits to taking inspiration from other films as it allows us to get all of the best features from different movies in order to give us the most dynamic and professional title sequence possible. It will also attract a wider audience as they will recognise and appreciate the different styles and techniques incorporated into our media product. This has allowed us to create the most captivating and immersive experience for the viewer.
Despite all of the benefits of taking ideas and inspiration from other title sequences it is important to maintain originality in our work and in doing so have contradicted the stereotypical style of a horror/slasher movie. We have achieved this by using many different techniques and styles, as seen from using a wide variety of horror movies that all contrast each other. This has therefore created an original and creative idea that will fill what we believe to be a major gap in the market.
