BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification which was established in 1912 and has the job of classification and censorship for films in the UK depending on the content and from this setting an appropriate age rating.
For our opening title sequence we have had to make sure the age rating was appropriate for who we were creating the film for. As well as this we had to make the age rating similar to our actors so that the audience could relate to them. As a result of this we decided to go with an age rating of 15 as our target audience was between the ages of 15 and 18 therefore we could not go below the age of 15 to 12 and if we went to an age rating of 18, our younger target audience members would not be able to watch it.
Here you can see the different age ratings that are available to be selected for films based on what content is in the film.

This U symbol stands for universal and should be used for films that have a target audience for four years and over. As a result of this the content should be in no way offensive however at that age the BBFC cannot be certain what may offend their viewers. The content that is allowed on a 'U' video is very limited with only mild language (e.g. hell, damn), non serious violence where the 'good guy' always wins to avoid any emotional stress and very small amounts of sexual behaviour with kissing and hugging being the extent of what may be included.

This PG stands for parental guidance and as a result must be suitable for genreal viewing of all ages however some scenes may be inappropriate for younger children; these films should also not unsettle anyone aged eight and over. In PG films there should only be certain bad language allowed such as 'shit' or 'son of a bitch'. Also sex scenes are not allowed unless there is a lack of detail and they do not occur frequently within the film. Finally there is a small amount of violence with blood allowed however advised to keep at a minimal.

12 age ratings provide films with content that is not necessarily suitable for children under the age of 12 and therefore should not be watched by those under the age of 12. However 12A's are suitable for those under the age of 12 to watch as long as they are accompanied by an adult. In a 12 rated film they are allowed to use some strong language depending on how it is being used. They may also use moderate violence and brief sexual scenes.

15 rated films provide content which is best suited to those aged 15 and over. The content you may expect to find in these films can include strong violence which is often shown through the use of fight scenes along with the use of blood and gore. As well as this you may expect to find frequent uses of strong violence along with references to sex. There may also be sexual scenes or scenes involving nudity.

Films that have the age rating of 18 are made for adults and the content included in them is not seen as being suitable for children. Things you may expect to be included in an 18 rated film are scenes with very strong language as well as very strong violence. Other things which may be included in these films are strong portrayals of sexual activity or potentially sexual violence. You may also find examples of discriminatory actions and horror (strong blood and gore).
